This paper presents a study of the influence of the harvesting date on concentrations of odorants in Moristel wines of two vintages. The wine made from grapes harvested early facilitated the accumulation of acetaldehyde (associated with low polyphenols concentrations) and higher concentrations of branched acids. A reason for these greater levels could be the lack of reduction factors (NADH or NADPH). Other changes with potential sensory consequences are the decrease of the branched acid/branched alcohol, branched ester/branched acid and branched ester/branched alcohol ratios that occurs as the grapes ripen. Besides, the variations of varietal or typical maturation markers did not have sensory importance. These results suggest that the characteristics of wines associated to the degree of maturity of grapes are mostly related to the changes in the profiles of fermentative compounds (especially acetaldehyde) induced by changes in the polyphenolic content and in the medium in which the yeast develops. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main precursors of tropospheric ozone and secondary aerosol generation, posing a threat to human health and affecting the environmental climate. A large quantity of VOCs can be produced in the initial decomposition stage of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this study, the atmosphere in an MSW transfer station was monitored for one year. The emission characteristics of VOCs in different seasons and working hours were analyzed, and the ozone-formation potential of VOCs was calculated through the maximum incremental reaction method, and health risks posed by the VOCs in the MSW transfer station were assessed. The results showed that the highest concentration of VOCs appeared in spring and summer, accounting for 70.6% and 26.6% of total VOCs (TVOCs) in peak working periods, respectively. Oxygenated compounds and terpenes contributed most to ozone formation, accounting for 41.0% and 50.6% of total ozone formation, respectively. The carcinogenic risks were above the safe threshold, labeled "probable risks". Tetrachloroethylene and 1,2-dichloroethane were the main contributors to carcinogenic risks. The mean non-carcinogenic risks were within the safe threshold in the MSW transfer station. From the perspective of protecting human health and ecological environmental safety, VOC control needs to be further strengthened in the transfer station. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to demonstrate suitability and safety of an infant formula enriched with α-lactalbumin with a reduced protein content of 1.89 g protein/100 kcal. METHODS This was a randomized, double-blind controlled trial with 80 healthy newborn infants who were assigned to receive either an isocaloric low- or high-protein content formula (1.89 versus 2.1 g/100 kcal). The low-protein content formula was enriched with α-lactalbumin. A breast-fed reference group of 40 infants was studied concurrently. Anthropometric measures were taken at inclusion, after 6 and 12 wk as well as after 6 and 12 mo of follow-up. Primary outcome was weight gain in g/d between study inclusion to 12 wk. There was no difference in weight gain among feeding groups at the end of the intervention period. Mean weight gain in g/d was 32 in the low-protein, 31 in the high-protein, and 33 in the breast-fed reference group. No significant difference was found between study groups in Z-scores for weight, length, head circumference, weight-for-length, or body mass index nor for fat percentage at end of intervention and after follow-up. CONCLUSION α-lactalbumin-enriched formula with a protein content of 1.89 g protein/100 kcal is safe and supports adequate growth. OBJECTIVES Breast cancer (BC) is the most diagnosed cancer in women. Increasing survival rates shift attention to preventive strategies. Obesity and intestinal microbiota composition may be associated with BC. A Mediterranean diet (MD) proved to be protective. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of probiotics in addition to an MD versus diet alone in influencing gut microbiota and metabolic profile in overweight BC survivors. METHODS A total of 34 BC survivors were randomly assigned to an MD for 4 mo plus 1 sachet/d of probiotics (Bifidobacterium longum BB536, Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001) for the first 2 mo (intervention group, n&nbsp;=&nbsp;16) or an MD alone for 4 mo (control group, n&nbsp;=&nbsp;18). Anthropometric and nutritional assessments, adherence to the MD, compliance with physical activity, and metabolic parameters dosage were performed at baseline (T0), at 2 mo (T2), and at 4 mo (T4). Intestinal microbiota analysis was performed at T0 and T2. RESULTS After 2 mo of probiotic administration the number of bacterial species (P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.01) and the bacterial diversity assessed with the Chao1 index (P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.004) significantly increased; no significant variations were detected after diet alone. The Bacteroidetes-to-Firmicutes ratio significantly decreased in the intervention group and increased in controls (P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.004). Significant reductions of body weight, body mass index, fasting glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance were identified at T4 in both groups; in the intervention group waist circumference (P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.012), waist-to-hip ratio (P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.045), and fasting insulin (P&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.017) also significantly decreased. CONCLUSIONS Probiotics in addition to an MD positively influence gut microbiota and improve metabolic and anthropometric parameters compared with an MD alone. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to characterize the development of auditory and language skills in children during the first 3 years of auditory brainstem implant (ABI) use. METHOD It is a retrospective longitudinal analysis of auditory and language skills in 12 children and pre-adolescents with pre-lingual deafness following ABI surgery (mean age at surgery 4 years; age range 2-11 years). Responses were analyzed aboutInfant Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS), MAIS, and Meaningful Use of Speech Scale (MUSS) at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months after ABI activation. RESULTS Maximum IT-MAIS/MAIS and MUSS scores after 3 years of ABI use were 45.35% and 35.28%, respectively. CONCLUSION Pediatric patients exhibit slow progressive development of auditory and language skills following ABI activation.
